Trump Selects Kimberly Greenwood for Caribbean Ambassadorship and Names Wesley Hunt Envoy to Saudi Arabia

President Donald Trump has officially nominated Kimberly Greenwood, the wife of country music singer Lee Greenwood, to represent the United States as ambassador to Barbados and several nations across the Eastern Caribbean. The personnel selection adds a prominent cultural ally and longtime associate to the administration’s slate of diplomatic appointees awaiting confirmation in the upper chamber of Congress.

The White House formally submitted Greenwood’s name to the U.S. Senate on Monday alongside a wider list of prospective envoys intended to fill key diplomatic vacancies worldwide. Her nomination will require Senate approval before she can assume her post in the Caribbean region.

Following the public announcement, Kimberly Greenwood shared a photograph on Instagram featuring herself alongside her husband and Trump. In her post, she expressed gratitude to the president for extending the diplomatic nomination, thanking him for placing his trust in her and presenting her with what she described as an extraordinary chance to serve the country.

The nomination reflects the deep, long-standing relationship between the president and her husband, Lee Greenwood. The musician’s patriotic anthem, "God Bless the USA," has served for years as Trump’s defining entrance music at campaign rallies and political events. Beyond political appearances, Trump has also partnered commercially with the singer to market and distribute a themed "God Bless the USA Bible" priced at $59.99.

Her husband also publicly celebrated the nomination on Instagram, emphasizing his wife’s extensive professional history with the president. He highlighted that she had worked alongside Trump for roughly 18 years while he owned the Miss Universe Organization, during which time she served as a director overseeing state-level beauty pageants.

Under the terms of the official nomination, Greenwood is slated to serve concurrently as the chief U.S. envoy to Barbados and provide non-compensated diplomatic representation to several other Eastern Caribbean island nations. Her regional jurisdiction includes Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Appointing prominent allies, fundraisers, and campaign supporters to ambassadorships has long been a bipartisan custom in American politics. Both Republican and Democratic administrations have regularly rewarded key backers with coveted postings in geographically desirable or politically stable regions.

The Caribbean post has previously gone to political appointees under previous leadership. Democratic President Joe Biden tapped Roger Nyhus, a prominent Seattle business leader and political donor to the Democratic Party, to lead the identical diplomatic mission in the Eastern Caribbean.

Alongside the Caribbean announcement, Trump put forward outgoing Republican U.S. Representative Wesley Hunt of Texas to take on the high-profile post of U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia in Riyadh. Hunt is currently concluding his second term in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he has represented a district in the Houston area.

Hunt’s nomination follows his recent primary campaign in Texas, where he finished third in the March 2026 Republican primary for the U.S. Senate behind Attorney General Ken Paxton and Senator John Cornyn.

If confirmed by the Senate, Hunt will step into the Riyadh ambassadorship during a volatile period for Middle Eastern diplomacy. The regional posting comes amid an ongoing military conflict involving the United States and Israel against Iran, alongside heightened hostilities between Saudi Arabia and Iran-aligned Houthi forces based in Yemen.

Hunt previously served as an officer in the U.S. Army, a career that included work as a diplomatic liaison in Saudi Arabia prior to his entry into electoral politics. Following the announcement, Hunt posted on X that he fully recognized the vital strategic importance of the U.S.-Saudi alliance and welcomed the immense responsibility that comes with leading the mission.

The White House also announced several additional diplomatic selections on Monday, advancing nominees to fill vacant ambassadorial seats in Haiti, Somalia, Djibouti, and Suriname.

While politically appointed envoys historically manage posts without exerting major independent foreign policy influence, political appointees from the donor and supporter classes have occasionally generated controversies during past administrations.

During Trump's first presidency, several non-career ambassadors drew public scrutiny. Gordon Sondland, a hotel executive who contributed $1 million to Trump's inauguration, served as ambassador to the European Union before providing critical testimony during Trump's first impeachment inquiry regarding Ukraine, which led to his dismissal.

Other appointees also made headlines, including Jeffrey Ross Gunter, a donor serving as ambassador to Iceland who unsettled local officials in Reykjavik by requesting armed personal security in the low-crime nation. Additionally, Robert "Woody" Johnson, who served as ambassador to the United Kingdom, faced allegations concerning racist and sexist remarks as well as inquiries into whether he attempted to help secure the British Open golf tournament for a Trump-owned resort property in Scotland.
