Tragic Discovery: Son Learns Missing Dad Could Have Been Lost in Nepal Flood After Viral Video Emerges

The devastating Himalayan flood that swept through Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region in August 2026 has left a family in the United States grappling with the heart-wrenching possibility that they may have lost a loved one. Sunny Patel, a young man from the U.S., was watching footage of the catastrophic event when he made a chilling realization: his father, Jitendra Patel, could have been caught in the flood's path.

The flood, caused by a massive chunk of ice breaking off a glacier and falling into the Lhende Khola River, sent waves of rock, ice, and debris through the mountain river systems. The disaster has killed more than 600 people and left over 3,000 missing, with more than 4,000 individuals rescued so far. Amidst the chaos, Sunny Patel's family found themselves in an unimaginable situation, as they feared Jitendra Patel had become one of the many unaccounted for.

Sunny Patel last spoke to his father on a Wednesday morning, local time, believing Jitendra had crossed the border from Nepal into China. The young man's mother was hoping they had not seen the viral video of the torrential flood, but the video's reach was too great to avoid. "I watched the video and I just thought of how horrific it was. And then... probably 30 seconds later, it registered," Sunny recalled. "That's exactly where he was."

The Patel family's frustration has been compounded by the lack of information coming out of China. They have reached out to embassies in Kathmandu and Beijing, as well as the U.S. State Department, to no avail. Sunny Patel explained, "We've filed missing person reports with every agency we can think of, and some have been responsive." Despite these efforts, the family has yet to receive any concrete information about Jitendra Patel's fate.

The flood's impact has been devastating for the communities affected, with employees in Trishuli, Nepal, retrieving banknotes from a sludge-covered bank and residents in Devighat, Nepal, coping with the aftermath of the flash floods and mudslides. For the Patel family, the emotional toll has been immense. "We're trying to go on these media segments and get the awareness out there that there are people on the Chinese side that we aren't getting a ton of information about," Sunny Patel said.

Experts believe the mudslides and flash flooding were a tragic consequence of the changing climate and the melting glaciers in the region. The destruction caused by the flood has raised concerns about the environmental impact of climate change on vulnerable mountainous areas.

Jitendra Patel was among the many who embark on a spiritual pilgrimage to Mount Kailash every year. Sunny Patel described his father as a person who "believed in the goodness of everybody, probably to a fault" and lived with "kindness in his heart." The family remembers him as someone who always had a positive outlook on life, often sharing his enthusiasm for his spiritual journey. "He always, always, always said, 'God is good...' If you called him and said, 'How you doing?' He would say, 'I'm the best, God is great.' And he was just the most upbeat, positive person I've ever known."

As the search for missing individuals continues, the Patel family clings to hope that they may still find Jitendra Patel alive. The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of natural disasters and the importance of staying informed and connected during such times of crisis.
