Texas Senate Candidate James Talarico Backtracks on Gender Rhetoric and Endorses Ban on Youth Surgeries

Democratic Senate hopeful James Talarico has expressed support for a federal prohibition on youth gender surgeries and voiced opposition to transgender-identifying males taking part in female sports. The candidate also walked back several controversial statements he had made previously regarding gender identity, acknowledging that his past commentary failed to hit the appropriate mark as his high-profile statewide campaign enters its final stretch.

The Texas state representative made the remarks during an exclusive sit-down interview with Fox News while attending a Dallas food drive event. The outreach event unfolded just a short distance from downtown Dallas, where the inaugural Republican midterm convention had simultaneously launched. Talarico’s revised positions emerge during an increasingly competitive race that political analysts consider vital for determining which party controls the upper chamber of Congress.

When questioned directly about whether he would cast a vote in the United States Senate to approve a nationwide restriction preventing minors from receiving gender-transition surgical procedures, Talarico responded affirmatively without hesitation. The Democratic nominee asserted that his perspective on the core issue of surgical interventions for children has remained steady throughout his legislative tenure, despite scrutiny over his past voting record in Austin.

Addressing his prior opposition to Texas legislation on the subject, Talarico explained that he voted against a statewide measure because its provisions were crafted too broadly. He maintained that as a representative, his responsibility is to evaluate the entirety of a bill's legal impact and push back when proposed statutory language threatens to cause unnecessary harm.

Talarico pointed to his past legislative efforts to narrow the scope of state-level restrictions, noting that he backed a key amendment designed to restrict the measure solely to pediatric surgeries. During the 2023 legislative session in the Texas House of Representatives, lawmakers considered Senate Bill 14, which prohibited minors from accessing puberty-blocking drugs, hormone therapies, and specific surgical operations. While Democrats offered eighteen distinct amendments in an effort to alter the bill—all of which Talarico supported—each amendment was rejected before the comprehensive legislation passed.

The Democratic candidate also adjusted his stance regarding athletic competition, affirming that biological males participating in women's sports categories poses a significant concern for Texas residents. He stated that he opposes transgender athletes competing in female divisions whenever such arrangements compromise the safety of competitors or undermine fundamental athletic fairness.

Drawing upon his professional background prior to entering electoral politics, Talarico noted that his outlook is directly shaped by his years working as a public school educator. He stressed that safeguarding student welfare and maintaining equitable competitive environments must remain paramount when addressing participation rules across school athletic programs.

This framework represents a visible evolution from Talarico's actions during the 2021 legislative session, when he served on the Texas House Public Education Committee. At that time, he actively fought against Senate Bill 29—which sought to mandate that public school athletes participate in sports based solely on the biological sex recorded on their original birth certificates—dismissing the legislative debate as an artificial conflict. He later registered a vote against House Bill 25, which ultimately codified similar athletic restrictions into Texas law.

In addition to shifting his policy stances, Talarico distanced himself from earlier ideological declarations that had generated sharp pushback from conservative critics. The candidate conceded that he had missed the mark during past discussions where he claimed the existence of six separate genders and suggested that God should be characterized as nonbinary.

Moving forward, Talarico signaled an intention to redirect his campaign messaging toward broad economic issues, promising to make household affordability and financial relief central themes of his platform. The candidate also voiced criticisms regarding the ideological trajectory of the U.S. Supreme Court as he attempts to appeal to a wider swath of the Texas electorate.

The recalibration comes as public opinion surveys demonstrate an unexpectedly tight contest between Talarico and his Republican opponent, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. Paxton, a prominent conservative figure who has navigated multiple political controversies of his own, is fighting to preserve the seat for the Republican Party ahead of the November 3 general election.

The outcome of the Texas Senate race carries immense national significance, as party leaders view the seat as a potential tipping point in the broader struggle for Senate committee leadership and floor control. An upset victory by a Democrat in the traditionally conservative stronghold would substantially curtail President Donald Trump’s capacity to secure judicial appointments and advance his administration's legislative priorities.

With election day rapidly approaching, both candidates are intensifying their statewide campaign operations. Talarico’s pivot on cultural issues reflects a determined effort to neutralize potential vulnerabilities, bridge ideological divides, and assemble a viable coalition in one of the most closely watched Senate battles in the nation.
