Richard E Grant's Accidental Traitor Confession Steals the Show as Celebrity Traitors Returns

The second series of The Celebrity Traitors opened with a theatrical flourish this week, as host Claudia Winkleman made her grand entrance emerging from a coffin carried by druids

The second series of The Celebrity Traitors opened with a theatrical flourish this week, as host Claudia Winkleman made her grand entrance emerging from a coffin carried by druids inside a church. The dramatic arrival set the tone for an episode that delivered both spectacle and one of the most unexpected moments in the show's history.

Winkleman greeted 21 nervous-looking famous faces, brushing off her elaborate entrance with a characteristically deadpan quip about having enjoyed "quite the nap." Her appearance drew an immediate comparison from model and actress Jerry Hall, who dubbed her "Claudiapatra" in reference to the Egyptian queen Cleopatra, noting similarities in both the grandeur of the moment and the host's distinctive hairstyle.

The host later revealed at the programme's press launch that she had been delighted with what she described as her "iconic entrance," though she admitted she had originally considered hiding inside a suit of armour in the castle. She joked that the whole concept felt like a "GCSE history fantasy," explaining that the alternative option had been to conceal herself within a grandfather clock.

However, the night's most talked-about moment belonged not to Winkleman but to actor Richard E Grant. Alongside presenter Maya Jama, Grant was selected as one of three traitors. Yet in a startling departure from the game's core premise, he almost immediately announced his secret role to the other contestants, seemingly overcome with excitement at having been chosen.

The revelation was met with stunned silence, a reaction that underscored just how unprecedented the slip-up was. Singer James Blunt described it as "an interesting angle," while comedian Rob Beckett told Grant he had likely done something that had never occurred in the game before, calling it a bold strategy.

Grant later acknowledged the gravity of his error in footage shown to viewers, confessing that it may have been the biggest mistake of his life. He explained that he had been so thrilled to be selected as a traitor that in his unguarded excitement he simply blurted out the truth, and he recognised he would now need to defuse the considerable scrutiny heading his way.

The following day, former BBC journalist Amol Rajan pressed Grant on what had happened the previous night. Rather than planting clever seeds of doubt among his fellow contestants, Grant offered what appeared to be a flustered response, effectively confirming his guilt once again. Rajan branded him the "Lord of Chaos" for his behaviour.

Despite the confession, not everyone was convinced. Jerry Hall, who described Grant as a neighbour and a friend of three decades, insisted she did not believe he was a traitor. She suggested his eccentric behaviour was simply an act of frustration at not having been chosen for the role, though her loyalty could yet be tested given the show's history of dramatic betrayals.

Fellow contestant Miranda Hart also leaned towards believing Grant could be a faithful, even as she admitted to being confused by the unfolding situation. Winkleman, speaking at the press launch, said she believed Grant had revealed his identity by accident precisely because he was so delighted with his role, describing him as giddy and clearly enjoying the chaos he had created.

Ed Gamble, who hosts the BBC One and BBC Sounds spin-off show Uncloaked, compared the moment to someone being handed the lead role in a film and being unable to keep it to themselves. He called it an insane moment in the programme's history, hinting that Grant may find nobody ever trusts him with a secret again.

Grant eventually appeared to recognise the need for a change of approach, allowing the far more composed Jama to take the lead in their subsequent decision-making as the traitors navigated the fallout from his outburst.

Elsewhere in the episode, other celebrities demonstrated their value to the group, most notably Ross Kemp. The former EastEnders actor turned documentary-maker, known for his hard-man persona and programmes exploring gangs and the armed forces, admitted to feeling nervous as he sat in the church pews before the first task.

Kemp came into his own during the challenge, joining forces with former army captain James Blunt to divide the celebrities into teams. Their leadership paid off handsomely, with the group successfully locating treasure aboard a pirate ship and adding £15,000 to the prize pot.

Yet Kemp's composure quickly unravelled upon returning to the castle, where paranoia took hold. Bella Ramsey, a key contributor during the task, had taken a captain's hat from the boat and playfully placed it on Kemp's head to celebrate their victory, a gesture he apparently interpreted as something far more sinister.

The tension escalated further when Leigh-Anne Pinnock of Little Mix brushed against Kemp's arm as she passed through the bar. Recalling how Alan Carr had eliminated Paloma Faith in the first series by touching her face, Kemp became visibly fearful that he had been targeted by a traitor.

Gamble found the contrast hilarious, noting that the same man who had confidently commanded the mission was now terrified by a member of Little Mix touching his arm. He described it as one of the funniest things he had ever witnessed, marvelling at what he called the variety of men living within the Ross Kemp sphere.

Actress Myha'la also made her mark on the episode, revealing her intention to be perceived by fellow contestants as warm and perhaps a little naive in contrast to the more calculating characters she has portrayed on screen. Her comments suggested she intended to play a subtler game than some of her more outspoken competitors.

With Grant's confession hanging over the castle and paranoia already taking root among the celebrities, the series appears set to deliver the mixture of strategy, suspicion and unintended comedy that has made the format such a success.
