Rep. Ilhan Omar Stays Silent Following Police Raid on Residence Shared by Her Son and Convicted Felon

Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota declined to answer questions from reporters on Capitol Hill regarding a recent law enforcement raid on a residence shared by her 20-year-old son and a roommate who is a convicted felon. The police search, which resulted in the discovery and seizure of multiple firearms and rounds of ammunition, has prompted questions regarding the living arrangements and associations of the lawmaker's son.

The police operation occurred on August 25, when officers with the Minneapolis Police Department executed a court-authorized search warrant at the shared property. The residential dwelling serves as the home of Omar’s son, Adnan Hirsi, age 20, and his 22-year-old roommate, identified in official reports as Abdulrahman Abdi. Upon entering and searching the premises, investigators uncovered multiple weapons along with associated ammunition.

According to reports, the sequence of events leading up to the residential raid commenced during a routine traffic stop involving Abdi. Minneapolis police pulled over the 22-year-old and determined during the stop that he was operating a motor vehicle without a valid driver's license and could not provide proof of mandatory insurance.

Following the roadside encounter, law enforcement officers impounded the automobile and initially allowed Abdi to be released from the scene. However, a subsequent inspection of the impounded vehicle led officers to discover a firearm inside the car, which dramatically altered the scope of the investigation.

Because Abdi is an individual with a prior felony conviction on his record, applicable statutes strictly prohibit him from purchasing, carrying, or possessing any firearms or ammunition. Consequently, the discovery of the firearm inside his impounded car provided investigators with the necessary probable cause to secure a search warrant for the residential property he shares with Omar's son.

Authorities have made clear that Hirsi is not accused of any criminal wrongdoing in connection with the incident, nor does he face any charges stemming from the search or the traffic stop. Similarly, Representative Omar herself has not been accused of any unlawful conduct. The criminal investigation remains centered exclusively on Abdi’s unlawful possession of firearms as a convicted felon.

Despite the fact that Hirsi faces no formal allegations, the recovery of a cache of weapons and ammunition at his shared home has attracted public attention and scrutiny. The circumstances have prompted outside observers to raise concerns regarding the young man's close proximity to an individual with a significant and repeated criminal record.

When approached by members of the press in the corridors of Capitol Hill, Omar gave the cold shoulder and refused to offer any commentary or clarification regarding the controversy. The congresswoman remained steadfastly silent as reporters followed her through the legislative complex, seeking her reaction to the police action at her son's home.

Journalists pressed the Minnesota lawmaker on several key details of the incident, asking her directly what information she possessed regarding the situation and why the police intervention had happened in the first place. Reporters also asked whether she intended to advise her son to move away from the residence in order to distance himself from the troubling environment.

Omar offered no verbal response to the inquiries, continuing her walk through the halls of Congress in complete silence as she was peppered with questions. Subsequent attempts to obtain a statement from the lawmaker were also met without response, as her official congressional office did not immediately reply to press inquiries regarding the raid.

Records indicate that Abdi possesses an extensive history of interactions with the criminal justice system, having been arrested 10 times in the past. Among his prior legal infractions is a felony speeding conviction stemming from an arrest in 2024, during which law enforcement clocked him traveling at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour.

In the wake of the August 25 raid on the residence and the initial discovery of the firearm in the impounded vehicle, Abdi was taken into custody and faces a formal weapons charge. However, records show that he was released from custody the very next day following his arrest as the legal case against him proceeds.

The controversy surrounding the recovered firearms stands in notable contrast to Omar's established legislative platform in Washington. The progressive congresswoman has consistently maintained a strict and vocal public stance regarding firearm regulation, frequently calling for stronger nationwide gun control measures.

Throughout her tenure in the House of Representatives, Omar has actively championed policies aimed at curbing gun violence. Her legislative priorities include advocating for the complete closure of the private gun show loophole as well as the implementation of "red flag" laws, which temporarily restrict access to firearms for individuals identified as posing a threat to public safety.

Omar, who made history as a Somali refugee and the first hijab-wearing woman elected to the United States Congress, is currently campaigning for another term to represent Minnesota's heavily Democratic 5th Congressional District.
