More than a month after 29-year-old Tasia Fortune was discovered hanging from a tree in Jackson, Mississippi, her grieving family and local residents continue to demand transparency regarding the circumstances of her death. The discovery of Fortune’s body on August 3 in the lot of an abandoned property has sparked widespread outrage, grief, and fear in a southern state where historical memories of racial terror remain painfully vivid.
Following several weeks of silence that drew heavy criticism from the public, law enforcement officials in Jackson confirmed for the first time that they are treating the ongoing inquiry into Fortune’s death as a potential homicide. However, authorities simultaneously noted that an official cause and manner of death have not yet been formally established.
Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney addressed the community during a municipal meeting on Tuesday evening, stating that the department has approached the matter as a homicide investigation from its first day. In subsequent comments, Brackney clarified that the agency routinely manages unresolved death cases under a potential homicide protocol to guarantee that critical evidence is preserved while awaiting formal forensic findings.
Prior to Brackney's public remarks, the department had only referred to the incident as a death investigation. The police chief emphasized that investigators are conducting their work at the highest possible level while they await the findings of the state medical examiner, whose report will provide the official determination regarding how Fortune died.
The state medical examiner’s office has declined to release statements or offer insight into the active investigation. In the absence of definitive findings, Fortune’s family members have voiced profound frustration over what they describe as a troubling lack of communication from authorities.
Fortune’s mother, Christy Spivey, expressed intense anger over the delays and procedural hold-ups that have stalled answers about her daughter’s fate. Spivey recounted making repeated inquiries to municipal police that went unanswered for weeks, leaving her family in agonizing uncertainty until the police chief's public address on Tuesday.
Spivey last saw her daughter in late July during a family reunion in Kentucky, where Spivey resides. Fortune had lived in Mississippi for roughly ten years prior to her death, but during their final conversations together, she had spoken about the possibility of relocating back home to be closer to her family.
The subsequent encounter Spivey had with her daughter occurred at a funeral home just days before Fortune was laid to rest. The emotional impact was overwhelming for the family, with Spivey describing the immense pain of barely being able to look directly at her daughter's body.
The disturbing nature of Fortune's death has intensified concerns across Jackson, a majority-Black city where residents remain deeply sensitive to Mississippi's extensive and painful history of racial violence and lynchings. Community members have expressed concern that racially motivated violence may be resurfacing, with the prolonged lack of official answers allowing suspicion and apprehension to grow.
Unease among local residents has been further amplified by the fact that Fortune’s death is the third instance in Mississippi in under a year where an individual was discovered hanging from a tree. In September 2025, two men—one Black and one white—were found dead under similar circumstances on the exact same day.
While both of the September 2025 cases were officially classified as suicides, the findings have faced significant public pushback. Notably, the mother of Trey Reed, one of the men found dead, has openly contested the state's official ruling regarding her son's death.
Frustrated by recent cases involving people of color, tens of thousands of citizens have mobilized through online campaigns. One petition, which has gathered more than 50,000 signatures, calls for an independent inquiry into State Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Staci Turner and her office's handling of these investigations. A separate petition urges the FBI to step in and conduct an independent probe into Fortune's case.
Local officials have also leveled sharp criticism at the municipal police department’s handling of the situation. Jackson City Councilman Kenneth Stokes expressed alarm after visiting the location where Fortune was believed to have lived, stating that he saw no visible law enforcement presence at the property during multiple visits.
Councilman Stokes argued that any hanging in Mississippi warrants the highest investigative priority and urged swift intervention from federal authorities. Stokes disclosed that he had sent formal letters to both the FBI and the Mississippi U.S. Attorney’s office weeks earlier to request immediate investigative assistance, but had received no response from either entity.
The push for outside intervention has reached the federal level, with U.S. Representative Jasmine Crockett submitting a formal request to the Department of Justice. The congresswoman has petitioned federal authorities to intervene in the case and review the circumstances surrounding Fortune's death.
As community petitions circulate and federal officials face mounting requests for oversight, Jackson residents and Fortune’s family remain focused on securing a complete, transparent account of what occurred in the abandoned lot where her life ended.
