Norfolk GP Named as Woman Found Dead at Dersingham Home; Man Arrested on Suspicion of Murder

A woman who was discovered dead at a property in a quiet Norfolk village has been named locally as a general practitioner, as police continue to question a man arrested on suspicion of her murder.

Dr Hannah Terry, who also went by the name Hannah Cain, was found at an address in Fern Hill, Dersingham, on Sunday. The village sits close to the Sandringham estate in West Norfolk and is home to a few thousand residents.

Norfolk Police confirmed they were called to the property by the ambulance service shortly after 02:20 BST on Sunday. Officers arrived to find the woman dead at the scene.

A man in his 40s was arrested on suspicion of murder and remained in custody as of Monday. His identity has not been released by police.

On Monday, officers attended a hearing at Great Yarmouth Magistrates' Court, where they were granted an additional 32 hours to question the suspect. The extension means detectives can continue their interviews before any decision on charging is made.

Terry, who was in her 40s, has not been officially identified by Norfolk Police. However, tributes and local reporting have named her, and a medical practice where she worked has confirmed her connection to its team.

Grimston Medical Centre, where Terry is listed as a member of the practice team, posted a notice on its website stating it was "temporarily closed due to extremely difficult circumstances affecting our practice team." The closure affects patients in and around the village of Grimston, which lies a few miles south of Dersingham.

A cordon remained in place outside the house in Fern Hill on Monday, with police tape sealing off the driveway. A Home Office post-mortem examination was due to be carried out on Monday to establish the cause of death.

Det Insp Alix Wright, of the Norfolk and Suffolk major investigation team, said on Sunday: "We are in the very early stages of this investigation, working to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the woman's death." She added: "I'd ask anyone who believes they may have information that could help our investigation to please share this with us."

The major investigation team's involvement signals the seriousness with which police are treating the case. The team handles the most complex and high-profile crimes across the two counties, including homicides and suspected homicides.

The arrest of a man in his 40s and the granting of additional questioning time suggest detectives are pursuing active lines of inquiry. Under UK law, suspects can be held for an initial period before magistrates authorize extensions, which are typically granted when officers need more time to gather evidence or conduct interviews.

Police have not disclosed the relationship, if any, between the suspect and the deceased, nor have they confirmed whether the property where the body was found was her home. The force has also declined to comment on the circumstances leading up to the emergency call.

The case has shocked the local community, particularly given Terry's role as a GP. General practitioners occupy a trusted position in small communities, often serving families across generations and acting as a first point of contact for health concerns.

The temporary closure of Grimston Medical Centre has left patients in the area facing uncertainty. Surgeries in rural Norfolk often serve wide catchment areas, and a sudden closure can place additional pressure on neighboring practices and out-of-hours services. It is not yet clear how long the closure will last or how patients will be redirected.

NHS Norfolk and Waveney Integrated Care Board, which oversees local health services, has not issued a public statement on the closure. The BBC has approached the practice and health authorities for further comment.

Local news outlets have described Terry as a popular GP, and the closure notice on the practice website reflects the deep impact her death has had on colleagues. The wording of the notice — referring to "extremely difficult circumstances" — suggests staff are struggling to come to terms with the loss.

The post-mortem examination, conducted under Home Office oversight, is a standard step in suspicious death investigations. It aims to determine the precise cause of death, which will inform the direction of the police inquiry. Results are not usually released immediately.

Detectives have urged anyone with information to come forward. They have not yet issued a public appeal for specific witnesses or CCTV footage, but such appeals often follow in the days after a major incident.

Dersingham is a village in West Norfolk, roughly eight miles north of King's Lynn and close to the royal residence at Sandringham. The area is largely rural, with a mix of long-standing residents and visitors drawn to the nearby coast and countryside.

Violent crime in rural Norfolk is relatively rare, making a suspected murder in such a setting particularly jarring for residents. The presence of police tape and officers in Fern Hill has drawn attention in the community, and local people have expressed shock.

Norfolk Police have not released further updates since Monday's court hearing. The force has not confirmed when the suspect will next appear in court or whether further arrests are expected.

The investigation remains at an early stage, and police have stressed that they are still working to piece together the events leading to Terry's death. Anyone with information is asked to contact Norfolk Police or Crimestoppers anonymously.

For now, the focus rests on the forensic examination and the questioning of the suspect, while a medical practice remains shut and a village waits for answers. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
