Michigan Senate Hopeful Abdul El-Sayed Faces Sharp Backlash Over 9/11 Social Media Message and Past Associations

A commemorative message marking the anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks has triggered a wave of political backlash against Abdul El-Sayed, a progressive candidate seeking the Democratic nomination for the United States Senate in Michigan. The social media post, which aimed to reflect on the national tragedy, rapidly became a flashpoint among conservative commentators and Republican political operatives who questioned the authenticity of his remarks in light of his political ties.

In his online post published to the platform X, El-Sayed reflected on the enduring impact of the 2001 attacks, arguing that the strikes represented an assault on the fundamental values of the nation. He wrote that the attackers targeted the core concept of an America united by principles of liberty and justice, acknowledging that while the country sometimes falters in meeting those ideals, the victims of the tragedy must be remembered as casualties of an atrocious act of terror.

Despite the solemn tone of the post, critics quickly seized on the candidate’s message, bringing renewed attention to his public friendship and past campaign collaborations with controversial progressive streamer Hasan Piker. The association has long drawn scrutiny from political adversaries due to past inflammatory remarks made by Piker regarding American foreign policy and the historical context of the September 11 attacks.

Central to the outrage is Piker’s history of provocative rhetoric, notably a viral and widely condemned claim in which the online commentator asserted that the United States brought the 9/11 tragedy upon itself. Critics have repeatedly pointed to this commentary to argue that El-Sayed’s outward expressions of national mourning conflict with his willingness to share political platforms with individuals holding extreme views.

The online pushback against El-Sayed gathered rapid momentum among prominent conservative accounts. The widely followed profile Libs of TikTok directly attacked the Senate hopeful on Friday, dismissing his commemorative post as inauthentic and publicly branding the progressive candidate as a fraud.

Further criticism came from Steve Guest, a political commentator and former aide to Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas. Guest published an image displaying El-Sayed alongside Piker, sarcastically challenging the candidate over their association. Accompanying the photograph was another controversial statement attributed to Piker, in which the streamer used explicit language to express disdain for the country.

Republican political consultant Ryan Girdusky also voiced sharp condemnation on social media, arguing that El-Sayed’s ongoing alignment with someone who excused the 9/11 attacks demonstrated profound political dishonesty. Girdusky characterized the candidate's public posture as hypocritical given his history of campaigning alongside the divisive internet figure.

The controversy prompted official pushback from the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC). NRSC communications director Joanna Rodriguez posted a stern denunciation on X, arguing that El-Sayed has repeatedly refused to distance himself from individuals who have made disparaging remarks about American victims of terrorism.

Rodriguez further accused the Democratic contender of having a track record of minimizing the significance of American casualties from past attacks, alleging that his political rhetoric has often offered excuses or shown undue sympathy when evaluating global conflicts and hostile entities.

Other digital strategists aligned with the Republican Party weighed in on the delivery of the candidate’s tribute. GOP digital strategist Mike Hahn mocked the video component of El-Sayed's message, sarcastically commending the candidate for reading his prepared remarks directly from a script.

The intense reaction extended to conservative media leaders, including Joey Mannarino, co-founder of the right-wing organization known as the Overton Institute. Mannarino expressed disbelief at El-Sayed's competitive standing in the Michigan primary, asserting that voters in the state should reject a candidate who aligns with figures who justify terrorist attacks against the homeland.

Media observers also pointed out noticeable shifts in El-Sayed’s messaging compared to his previous anniversary statements. Chuck Ross, an investigative reporter for The Washington Free Beacon, highlighted that the recent post appeared strictly focused on the immediate events of 9/11, omitting the candidate's customary references to the broader consequences of the subsequent War on Terror.

The scrutiny surrounding the candidate’s foreign policy framing follows earlier controversies, including media coverage regarding previously deleted social media posts and his past public appearances. In April 2026, Piker joined El-Sayed in Ann Arbor, appearing with the candidate in a green room before an official primary campaign rally held at the University of Michigan.

In response to previous controversies involving Piker’s remarks—including an instance where the streamer compared the state of Israel to terrorist groups—El-Sayed has attempted to draw a clear line between his platform and outside influencers. The Senate hopeful previously stated that only he and his designated campaign staff speak on behalf of the campaign, rejecting claims that external commentators define his political agenda.

El-Sayed has consistently argued that political opponents and commentators are deliberately focusing on online personalities to distract voters from pressing bread-and-butter issues. Throughout his campaign, he has maintained that working-class Michiganders are primarily concerned with tangible economic challenges, such as the rising costs of gasoline, grocery prices, investments in public education, and access to affordable healthcare.

The escalating dispute illustrates the intense ideological battles defining the Michigan Senate contest, where candidates’ past associations, social media histories, and foreign policy perspectives remain under intense public evaluation by opponents on both sides of the aisle.
