Massive Malibu Sinkhole Swallows Driveway at Nicolas Cage Residence Following Severe Storm Swells

A massive sinkhole has swallowed a substantial portion of the driveway at a Malibu residence linked to Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage, following intense coastal storms and turbulent ocean swells that battered Southern California. The severe ground collapse created an immediate hazard for the coastal neighborhood, highlighting the destructive impact of recent regional weather patterns on local infrastructure.

The crater, estimated by authorities and emergency personnel to measure approximately 30 feet wide by 30 feet long (9.1 meters by 9.1 meters), opened up directly outside the seaside estate. The collapse caused widespread structural disruption along the property line, drawing urgent responses from municipal teams and emergency personnel tasked with securing the perimeter.

According to accounts from nearby residents, the geological trouble began developing earlier in the week as a significantly smaller feature. A depression measuring roughly eight feet across first formed on Monday, leading community members and property owners to believe that the issue was relatively minor and could be stabilized through routine engineering repairs.

However, the localized erosion deteriorated rapidly during the overnight hours. A neighborhood resident recounted to Los Angeles magazine that while homeowners initially showed little concern over the eight-foot hole, the situation escalated into a full-scale crisis in the pre-dawn hours of Tuesday when the ground gave way completely and "all hell broke loose."

When the catastrophic collapse occurred, the earth collapsed downward, dragging large segments of the private driveway along with it. The resulting crater was left littered with fragmented asphalt, cracked concrete slabs, and leftover construction debris that plunged into the newly created void.

The proximity of the residence to the Pacific coastline created an additional layer of peril. Visual assessments and reports from Agence France-Presse indicated that ocean waves pounding the shore were rushing directly into the opening, with water visibly surging inside the crater and circulating beneath the foundational stanchions that elevate and support the seaside home.

The geological failure occurred in the wake of severe atmospheric conditions linked to Tropical Storm Marie, a meteorological system that had previously developed as a hurricane. While the center of the storm remained well offshore over the Labor Day holiday weekend, it generated dangerous rip currents, substantial precipitation, and heavy surf with breaking waves reaching up to 10 feet along Southern California beaches.

The intense marine activity, paired with recent heavy rainfall across the region, led to official coastal flooding warnings throughout Los Angeles County. The relentless wave energy and oversaturated ground created optimal conditions for rapid coastal erosion, culminating in the structural failure along the Malibu roadway.

Emergency responders were dispatched to the location early Tuesday morning after the ground displacement caused a natural gas leak in the neighborhood. Crews from utility provider SoCalGas arrived on the scene to isolate the compromised infrastructure and subsequently confirmed that the gas line had been secured without further incident.

As a precaution against further ground instability, Malibu city officials took decisive action to protect the surrounding community. Municipal authorities declared at least five properties along the affected street unsafe for entry, placing restrictions on the homes until comprehensive structural and geological evaluations could be completed.

City officials also issued formal alerts warning residents that emergency services access had become severely constrained in the vicinity. Officials emphasized that segments of the local road network might remain entirely impassable due to the significant portion of the thoroughfare and adjacent private property that had dropped into the chasm.

Safety cones and barricades were swiftly positioned around the perimeter of the crater to keep motorists and onlookers away from the unstable edge. Despite the severity of the road collapse and the utility disruption, local authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported in connection with the incident.

The beachfront property was purchased by Nicolas Cage in 2024, according to property reporting published by The New York Times shortly after the transaction closed. Representatives for the veteran actor did not immediately provide comment when contacted regarding the damage sustained at the home.

Cage, who earned an Academy Award for his performance in the 1996 film Leaving Las Vegas, is widely recognized for his roles in major feature films such as Con Air, Face/Off, Gone in 60 Seconds, Moonstruck, Pig, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, and the television production Spider-Noir.
